He's probably as dry as a popcorn fart. Probably so.

And clothing that was very, very old should be falling apart. Unless that's a grrmumstance. Back to the clothing. When Bran find wights hiding under the snow ( Snow, Ned!) and the gang are making their way up the hill a wight wearing wool, leather and mail attacks Hodor. The leather is rotted and the mail is rusted. And inside the cave, Bloodraven's wardrobe has not survived age either. So where did Coldhands get his gear? Could it be that he is one of Benjen's company that left the wall and that is why he has fresh clothing? Am I burrowing to deep a rabbit hole without an end?

Heh, I had a thought he'd been pinching his clothing off of the dead Watchmen from the fist. Or maybe the odd ranger that dies on a ranging. Until he got Sam to the Black Gate, I thought Coldhands was putting on a show of being a black brother, just to put Sam and Gilly at ease. But his knowledge of how to open the BG is what convinced me that he truly was a Night Watchman back when he was alive. How else would he know of lost knowledge like the BG if he wasn't indeed dead 'killed long ago', back during a time the gate was in use. Or at the very least, still known about by the NW.

Well, I think that Leaf used the Gate to cross the Wall. Could have been the tunnels under though. The Watchmen from the Fist would be a good source of black clothing, as would Benjen and his party.

I'm thinking that Coldhands could be a vessel. Random associations ahead. Coldhands has black eyes like the ravens, speaks to the ravens, or at least understands them. He speaks some other language, the old tongue most likely, but it could something else. We are told that all the ravens are hosting dead Singers, and the trees [roots at least] are host to the Singers, Bloodraven and the crows. So what if Coldhands has been brought out of a raven or weirwood to inhabit the body he is wearing? I know it's far-fetched. CH could be anoyone. Bran the builder, the monster, even.

But how does the body get animated and not be affected or controlled by the Cold? To me Coldhands is an animated body, much in the same way as the wights, but he's not under the influence of the blue eyed Cold. I go between Coldhands having been a skinchanger in his actual life, and somehow got the blue eyed part of the animation process out, and him being one of those NW that got put into the Wall itself to guard it forever. On the skinchanger part, I picture Varamyr encountering his animated body, which I'll point out right now, he absolutely does not do in his POV chapter. When Thistle's body is taken over by the Cold, Varamyr is still in control of his living body, so he does not get reanimate at the same time she does. He later, after the death of his body, sees her and thinks 'She sees me' but it's important to note that his body is not among the wights, when he encounters them as One-eye. Now suppose his body does become animated. Since the gift of the skinchanger lies in the actual body, then it should be possible for him to use the gift once the body is nominally functioning again. The wights we've seen up close retain their memories, so something of the person remains in the body once it's walking and active again. A skinchanger could conceivably then use that to jump back into his body. In the case of Coldhands, I wonder if he didn't do just that. But he somehow managed to get the Cold out of him, while keeping the animation part. I should collect up my thoughts and post my Cold theory, which is slightly different to Wolfmaid's and Armstark's.

A thought came to me that their is a small similarity between Coldhands and Charon, the ferryman who delivers the dead to the underworld. Coldhands has an elk instead of a boat since they are not travelling the river. Bran, Jojen and the rest pass underground to emerge on the north side of the Wall where Coldhands delivers them to the cave of the cotf and Bloodraven. A.k.a Cave O' Doom. A.k.a. the underworld. . There is no hound of Hades, or Cerberus, guarding the path to the underworld, but their are a lot of wights at the entry who prevent anyone from leaving.

It is interesting the loss of knowledge about the Black Gate and the Nightfort and in my mind the real gate to the "other" world. Not like the pretender gate at Castle Black

I mentioned it on some forum, but I don't remember when or where or what I said about it. The thought came back to me because of the old Clash of the Titans movie. Since Coldhands has knowledge of the 'real gate', as you put it, he should be at least two hundred years old, but probably older. Gonna veer off track a little with the Black Gate. I'm thinking the Nightfort extended North of the Wall too. Sort of like the twins with a keep on each side of the river. Or the keep/fort was originally on the north side of the Wall and the BG was the way back to the south side. Then when the NK was brought down, all the forts sprang up on the south of the Wall. Either way, it would make sense for the Stark of Winterfell to need the aid of Joramun if there was a fort north of the Wall and the Nightfort. Some of the scary stories of the Nightfort would make more sense north of the Wall too. Coldhands could be almost any of the characters from Old Nan's stories.

Coldhands could be almost any of the characters from Old Nan's stories. He might well be. No I'm not thinking he's the Night's King. However, we do get some interesting characters to do with the Wall in her tales. The guys imprisoned in the Wall itself could be one source for his origin. With the deterioration of the Wall, who's to say he wasn't dislodged?

I've always wondered if he was the man sacrificed that Bran saw through the weirwood because of his neck scarf.

I've always wondered if he was the man sacrificed that Bran saw through the weirwood because of his neck scarf. Except the neck scarf is a fairly common apparel for the Night's Watch. I believe both Qhorin Halfhand and Chett wrap it around the lower half of their face in the books.

On that note, a similar thought came to me that Bran Stark, son of Eddard and Catelyn, died in his fall and the Brandon Stark that Coldhands has led to BR is actually a reanimated/ reincarnated version of a dead older one.

That's heavy, and a new twist on the many Brandons. Coldhands could have been another Brandon too! I'm glad you laid that out because it goes for Daenerys who parallels Bran's story. Dany died in the House of the Undying. Her heart stopped beating when the Undying attempted to feast on her lifeforce.
