Working on the chapter titles project has caused me to rethink what I thought I understood about wights and white shadow walkers. In The Drowned Man chapter we have Damphair drowning and then reviving believers of the Drowned God, which is meant to be a mirrored reflection of the Nights Watch's dead rising as wights, and the old gods of the north. If the Drowned God is the inversion of the old gods, then there may be the connection between the wights and the old gods. Euron tells the ironborn about conquering Westeros, “…I say we take it all! I say, we take Westeros…All for the greater glory of our Drowned God, to be sure.” Does this imply then that the Targaryens took the greater glory of the old gods of the Children and handed it over to the Faith of the Seven? This may be what has angered the old gods the most, and could be a motivating factor.
