Old thoughts, new thoughts... since Some Pig No Doubt is also thinking about the Mormonts role in the story, I thought I should dig this one up.
I've always thought "Jorah sold poachers as slaves to a Tyroshi" so bizarre and out of context. The big picture here is that I believe Jorah was under some sort of spell. I further believe that Bear Island holds some secrets having to do with the aftermath of Robert's Rebellion, and that Jorah wasn't trading slaves although he was involved in people-trafficking. It's even possible that Bear Island is where Dany was during the time she thought she was in Braavos.
But first things first, I do thing Jorah was/is under a spell of sorts.
General events: (still working on filling in the dates)
281ish Joer takes the Black right before Robert's Rebellion so Jorah can be Lord of Bear Island. Leaves Longclaw for Jorah.
288 Joer becomes LC of the NW, having risen rapidly through the ranks
? Jorah's first wife, a Glover, dies after several miscarriages
289 Jorah fights in the Greyjoy Rebellion, Robert Baratheon knights him.
289 Jorah is the jousting champion at the Tourney of Lannisport, defeating freakin Jaime Lannister.
He wears Lynesse Hightower's favor, then names her QoLaB, they get betrothed and married, all quickly approved by Lord Leyton Hightower
Lynesse tells Catelyn Stark the North is no place for a Hightower.
Jorah goes into debt trying to keep her happy
Jorah captures poachers on Bear Island
Jorah sells them to a Tyroshi slavetrader
Ned hears about it, declares his life forfeit
293 Jorah and Lynesse flee to Lys
Jorah leaves Longclaw behind, which makes its way up to Joer at the Wall
Jorah becomes a sellsword, fighting on the Rhoyne
He returns to Lys to find Lynesse has shacked up with Tregor Ormollen as his bestest concubine
He spends a year in Volantis, then wanders around as a sellsword
Jorah becomes a Targaryen Stalker, spy-reporting to Varys, in the hopes of winning a pardon from King Robert
Events in book one A Game of Thrones begin
"I don't get it"
Poachers on Bear Island. Fine. Jorah catches them. Fine. Then he... what? Imprisons them at Bear Island? Sends a raven to a Tyroshi slave trader? Waits on the shore to flag one down? Transports them there himself? What are all the other inhabitants (6 she-bears, a couple kids, Alysane's husband [?], general household, etc) of Bear Island up to while all this is going on?
Lynesse Hightower becomes a concubine? This is a great example of wondering why GRRM makes the decisions he makes. Lynesse Hightower marries Jorah, yada yada, ends up pretty much a high-class hooker in Lys.
Gerold Hightower, KG to Aerys and supposed co-conspirator to Rhaeger's shenanigans
Walys (*shakes fist!*) Hightower/Flowers, Maester of Winterfell to Rickard, Brandon, Eddard, Benjen and Lyanna Stark. Mysteriously vanishes from mention in the novels after Robert's Rebellion.
GRRM made the decision to make Lynesse a Hightower, to make Winterfell's Maester a Hightower Bastard, to make one of the infamous Rhaeger/Aerys KG a Hightower.
Meanwhile Leyton and the Mad Maid have been holed up in the Hightower at Oldtown reading about spells "for a decade", as of the prologue to AFFC, which is around 299, so.. since 289. Shortly after the ToL and Lynesse's marriage to Jorah.
Hightower = founded Oldtown (supposed Bran the Builder connection), founded The Citadel, follow The Seven, Targ Supporters (gets a little muddled during Dance v1)
as rich as House Lannister
refuse Tyrion Lannister as a match for a Hightower daughter
Knelt to Robert after RR, backed Renly during the Wot5K, betrothed Marg to Renly
Literally in bed with Houses Florent, Rowan, Redwyne, Cupps, Ambrose, Fossoway and...House Tyrell (Margaery is Leyton's granddaughter) and by association, House Lannister
So, is there more going on with Jorah's backstory? Was he just a slaver or was something else going on connected to the Hightowers?
The Hightowers alone are a huge topic, but I suppose my question is why did GRRM make his runaway high-class whore wife a Hightower if it were not connected to something else?
Was Jorah a pawn so he could take a particular part in events? Was he... under a spell?

The Mormonts of Bear Island were an old house, proud and honorable, but their lands were cold and distant and poor. Ser Jorah had tried to swell the family coffers by selling some poachers to a Tyroshi slaver. As the Mormonts were bannermen to the Starks, his crime had dishonored the north. Ned had made the long journey west to BearIsland, only to find when he arrived that Jorah had taken ship beyond the reach of Ice and the king's justice. Five years had passed since then.
