Spinoff from some S6 E3 conversation about the TOJ scene in HBO land. There has been a slow build toward a big reveal involving Rhaegar, Lyanna, and the tower, most commonly speculated as baby King JonAemon Targaryen, First of His Name.
However, given that half of the free world and just about anyone with an internet connection is familiar with the RLJ theory, it seems a bit....anticlimactic...to have the big reveal simply be a bastard son of the Prince of Dragonstone wailing away in the TOJ. I mean, big whoop. GRRM has more talent than that, and if D&D have the sense the Gods gave a rock, they would unveil a huge twist at the end (after some massive RLJ trolling of the fandom). So what could that big twist be, even if RLJ turns out to be a thing?
Well, how about Rhaegar Targaryen being "reborn" at the TOJ (via blood magic) as a literal dragon?
This is not a full-formed essay on this topic, but a dumping ground for evidence. DragonRhaegar has been a favorite crackpot of mine for a looooonnng time, and I think there are several passages and comments to support this.
I've got to collect book passages and such first, so I will start out with some random brain dumpage.
#1: SSMs. Three off top of my head:
a. GRRM stating that if Rhaegar gave the KG command to stay at the tower, they would do that.
b. Fan question: "Did the 3 KG know what was inside the tower?" GRRM answer: "Of course."
c. GRRM stating that Rhaegar was cremated as is tradition for fallen Targaryens, then being all "that's it for today folks, gotta go" before any follow-up questions could be asked. I have questioned this particular SSM many, many times - Rhaegar died on the Trident, in the Riverlands, far away from King's Landing. The royal forces had been defeated and were scattered hither and yon while the rebels swarmed the Trident. Jaime watched crows pecking at Rhaegar's eyes. Being "cremated as is tradition for fallen Targaryens" implies some kind of ceremonial burning...and this was to occur when, exactly? And performed by who, again? So, just weird overall. (I also speculated on the proximity of Saltpans - you know, salt, that was once used to preserve bodies....)
#2: Prince Rhaegar returned from the south to gather royal forces. Prince Rhaegar with all his rubies on the breastplate of his black armor. Catelyn's resurrection in the Riverlands via fire magic after being 3 days dead. (And, to shamelessly plug my own stuff, the eerie similarity to the resurrection of Thor after his battle with The Wrecker - see Marvel section.) The proximity of the Quiet Isle, place of solitude and refuge.
#3: The striking parallels between the info given about the TOJ and the ceremony performed by MMD for Drogo. ( I don't think I have posted this theory here yet but I can if anyone needs it. ) IMO there is a very, VERY high possibility that blood magic was performed at the TOJ based on the textual similarities to the MMD tent ritual. If so, why? MMD's ritual was (in Dany's eyes, anyway) to heal the sick/injured Drogo and call him back from death. That worked, sortof...in a monkey's paw kind of way. A dragon-child was born dead, and later real dragons were woken from stone.
