When Ned catches up to Robert at the Trident, Rhaegar is already dead and that would be when Ned tells Robert that Lyanna is dead. Sorry but no. Ned saves Roberts arse at the Stoney Step, in the Battle of the Bells which takes place after Ned is married to Catelyn. If Lyanna was already dead, why not tell Robert then? And again, it's not until after Ned leaves King's Landing and Robert and he fall out about the deaths of Rhaella and Aegon, when Robert says 'I see only dragonspawn' that Ned leaves to clean up what's left of the war. After the Siege at Dragonstone and after Ned's return from Dorne is when Ned tells Robert of Lyanna's death. If she had not died then, and both of them shared grief over her death, neither of them would be on speaking terms at the beginning of Thrones. So what I'm saying is this:- whatever wounds Lyanna took, she either recovered (like Myrcella), or she took them much later and died from them after the rebellion was over. Lyanna's death is key to their friendship. I'm not discounting what you're saying. I rather like it, but we need to account for certain amounts of canon as well. I propose that Lyanna was at White Harbour and that Ned found her there after all the wars, while he was returning Lady Dustin's red stallion. Then it would make sense, her death is what repaired Ned and Robert's friendship. See what I'm saying? You can't change the truth of the character's thoughts, only the events need to be tweaked so that they fit in with the rest of the known story. There is lots of wiggle room, so I think we can move something around, but others need to have their timing stay within the framework of what we know to be true.

What you suggest is possible, but I can see Ned withholding news about Lyanna until after the falling out, because could have been concerned about distracting his attention away from military strategy, and an angry Robert might be a foolish and reckless Robert. On the other hand, he still could have told him, had the falling out, and then reconnect after his return from Dorne on his way back to Winterfell...get to talking, commiserate over Lyanna, and then reconnect their friendship. This would make more sense logistically to not have to bring back anything or anyone from Dorne, other than the red stallion.

Just read the summary of the accidentally leaked (by HBO Nordic) episode 5. If it turns out this way, and assuming the show follows the story in broad strokes, i.e. character fates, the plot gets even weaker. Hold the door!
