Starting a conversation on this...just a couple of thoughts. Other than Brandon's appearances at KL, which will be part of other posts in this thread, we don't know much about him. Although we do have the story of his duel with Littlefinger.
Since we've been exploring the possibility that Bran actually is all the Bran's before him - including his dead Uncle Brandon - and that he does this by skinchanging them through time (or sumpthin) - it does raise some more questions about the duel between Brandon and Petyr. Even if you don't believe that, there are questions
By all accounts, the "wolf-blooded" Brandon was an exceptional swordsman, jouster, horseman and ladies man. He was fostered at Barrowtown, which is interesting for many reasons anyway. Not long after this duel and his death, Willam Dustin, his fosterer, joined Ned during the Rebellion and was famously killed (we think) at the ToJ, and his horse returned to Barrowtown.
So, first up, what was the deal with Brandon's duel with Petyr Baelish?
Brandon was a 20 year old man when 15 year old Petyr challenged him for Cat's hand. What was Petyr thinking, challenging Brandon while only wearing a breastplate and helm? Why would Petyr persist in a fruitless fight and sustaining a dozen wounds and a near fatal slash from a backhand? Maybe GRRM intended this show Petyr's obsession with Cat but it's so entirely out of character for the Petyr we know.
What was Brandon thinking with the opposite - preparing for the duel by donning full armor? Seems like a total disconnect here. By all accounts, Petyr was a pipsqueak and Cat had no interest anyway. It seems as if he was planning on actually killing Petyr before Cat begged him not to. Killing a boy - the foster son of his future father-in-law - seems like a colossally stupid idea. And I'm not sure how the dozen wounds and the final blow that almost eviscerated him is supposed to show restraint on Brandon's part. Brandon had just gone against Rhaegar Targaryen himself in the lists at the ToH. Why go to all this trouble when it's a so obviously mismatched fight?
Drunken Petyr had already been rejected by Cat and had slept with Lysa, and calling her "Cat" during the act. I can't help but see this as a parallel to drunken Robert calling out "Lyanna" on his wedding night with Cersei. The difference is that Petyr seems to have had a false memory implanted because of that night, believing he had taken the maidenheads of both Tully girls. I don't know how this fits in, other than to try and mirror this to other possible events in Brandon's life.
