I'm a little irritated right now, because I spent 30+ minutes writing up this recap and then accidentally closed the tab before saving.
Anyways - Elsie??? WTF!
I am getting weary of the constant back and forth between present, past, and future. I'm following, but it seems a bit clumsy. Whose side is Bernard on anyway? He keeps bringing up Ford - that Ford programmed him to do these things, but who wants to destroy Westworld and who wants to preserve it?
The biggest reveal of the episode was learning that William was trying to insert human consciousness into host-bodies so that they can live forever. His guinea pig is Mr Jim Delos - his boss and father-in-law, who we also learn was dying of some disease or cancer that he admits he had cut funding to the research into a cure. We also learn that William tried implanting Jim 149 times over decades, but instead of seeing improvements, Mr Delos's brain continues to degrade. William blames it on Jim's refusal to accept reality. There are hints of true consciousness when William tells him that Mrs Delos is dead and that his daughter (William's wife) committed suicide, and his son died of an overdose. Mr Delos seems authentically and appropriately bereaved.
We also learn that the woman from Imperial-world is William's daughter Emily, even though we hear William tell Jim that she's dead too. Is this before or after father and daughter reunite?
We get a little bit of a break from Maeve and Dolores/Wyatt, but William as the Man in Black picks up the "Glory" thread when he crosses paths yet again with the Confederados and saves his sidekick, Lawrence's family and village.
Back to Elsie! Why the long absence? Maybe in terms of the show its long, but maybe within the show she's only been kept hostage for a week or so? Who knows. In any case she knows it was Bernard that captured her and gave her protein bars and a bucket, but Bernard tells her that it was Ford that programmed him to do it. This whole sequence has Bernard flipping back and forth between past and present, but after Elsie (mostly) fixes Bernard, she explains the problem started when he shot himself last season (at Ford's urging), and that he can't tell what order his memories should be in, or whether he's experiencing the past or present. It's actually the best explanation the show could have possibly given, but to me it seemed a long time in coming. They've spent a lot of time on this past/present thing and I'm not sure if the payoff is enough...at least for now. I do have to say, though, that once this was explained I already knew that Jim Delos was in that bunker back inside the cave.
Whose side is Bernard on anyway? Is this a struggle between Ford wanting to keep the human-host hybrids and William's desire to destroy it? Or the other way around? Bernard keeps crediting/blaming Ford for his actions, yet it seems that Bernard is guilty of killing the faceless bots and technicians working on Jim Delos - even though he left a now insane Jim Delos alive. It's Elsie that after realizing what Jim is that she mercifully terminates him, but not before we hear him muttering about something. I'm sure his words will come up in a future episode. If I wasn't up so late watching last night I would have replayed it so I could hear what he said. Right now I don't remember.
The last reveal was that Bernard told Elsie that Ford had him print/install another human consciousness into a host-body - and my money is on Ford himself.
