Our 636th-day watch has ended and we've finally received season eight! How 'bout that! I was truly hopeful that the extra year off was due to George wrapping up Winds, and his departure from his mountain cabin seemed to signal that it might be true, but my dreams weren't meant to be, so I watched the next best thing: the show.
I cannot separate my comments from the books, so if you haven't read the books and are planning to, please stop - do not read further. You have been warned!
UGH! So many contradictions from the books. Where to start?
1) Ice Dragon
First off, there cannot be an ice dragon with an intact Wall. Queen Alysanne pretty much proved this when she was unable to get her dragon to fly north over the Wall. The Wall is warded against magic and dragons are magical creatures, so in order for there to be an ice dragon, the Wall would have to come down first.
2) Daenerys is Jon Snow's Aunt
Do you really believe this? Really? This is a huge topic all by itself and discussed ad nauseam all over the internet, so lets not get into that here and now. If you really want to discuss this topic, please head over to The Land is One section under A Song of Ice and Fire: the Novels and pick a topic. That being said, I was rolling my eyes at the dragon's "sniffing" Jon's Targaryen genes. I'm sure that stare was meant to let the audience know that the dragons know who he really is.
3) The Iron Bank
In the books Cersei refused to pay the crown's debt to the Iron Bank, so it sent it's agent, Tycho Nestoris to seek out Stannis, who agreed to pay the crown's debt if the Iron Bank supported him with money. On the show, Stannis is long dead, as is Ramsay Bolton, who are both very much alive at the end of Dance.
4) The Night's King
In the books the Night's King is a historical figure from 8000 years ago. He was the 13th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch that was removed from office by the Lord of Winterfell who had help from Joramun, who was the King Beyond the Wall at that time. Jon Snow is technically replaying the Night's King story. He was the Lord Commander when he was removed from office by being killed by mutineers.
5) Tyrion appealed to and then believed his sister, Cersei
Book Tyrion might try to negotiate with his sister, but he would have never taken her word for granted. He would have had multiple plans in place to test her honesty.
6) Harry Strickland and the Golden Company
I am looking forward to watching to see how Harry Strickland's Golden Company plays out, but in the books the Golden Company are with Jon Connington and helped take back Griffin's Roost. And the entire storyline of Young Griff and Arianne is completely missing from the show.
7) Euron and Asha Greyjoy
The show has really missed an opportunity by not fleshing out the Ironborn storyline. At the end of Dance, Asha is with Stannis, not Euron, while Euron has his eyes on Dany's dragons.
8) Sandor is alive and Arya didn't kill him
I know people theorize that Sandor is still alive as the gravedigger, but I trust Arya killed him.
9) Sam left the Citadel before he could become a maester
I really don't see that happening, unless Sam really does find something really important while at the Citadel, but even then it would be faster and more prudent to send a raven.
