In GoT, Benjen saunters on down to Winterfell for a party. Meanwhile, we're told over and over again that once you take the Black, that's it, no more family. There are no other characters who visit home, ever, yet it sounds like Benjen does it often enough to be friendly with Jon. So, does Benjen get special treatment? If so, why? What does this tell us? Or... is this an error, and GRRM hadn't quite solidified the rules of taking the Black? I think I remember reading that after a certain period far after being initiated, members of the Night's Watch could visit their family. Realistically I am guessing only a few families could do that given the distance involved.

Or... is this an error, and GRRM hadn't quite solidified the rules of taking the Black? I think, but I'm not entirely sure on this, Benjen was sent down to the party to see if he could get an audience with King Bob. They are always in of help at the Wall, so as brother to the host of the royal visit, I would imagine that's why Mormont sent Benjen. I did notice the same thing you did though. For a company of men that are meant to break all ties with the outside world, they do get around. Thorne is sent to King's Landing. Jon sends runners to the Mountain Clans, then the Umbers and all the closest Houses to find a wet nurse for Monster. There is more than one recruiting party that goes around the 7K, not just Yoren. Then there is the escorting of important guests back to where they came from. A biggest of all is Dareon, Sam and Maester Aemon leaving the Wall to go to the Citadel, with the proviso that Dareon and Sam have to come back. And Sam is given permission to go home to drop Gilly and the baby off. So Benjen going home on a regular basis to treat with the Warden of the North is maybe not so strange?
