Aegs & Bacon
Samwell Tarly is Aegon VI Targaryen, the Prince that was Promised, whose song is the Song of Ice and Fire. That's right, the nerdy fat guy, Ser Piggy, is the hero.
Ha, you say. I say, hear me out.
Disinheritance in Westeros:
Samwell is the most famous example of being disinherited and cast out of a noble family.
Tywin quasi-disinheritance of Tyrion was never official, and Tywin always made plans for him to have a place within the family. We don't know if Tywin seriously planned to send Tyrion to the Wall or expected him to lose his trial. Either way, Tywin would be spared of officially disinheriting a Lannister, after being placed in an awkward position when Jaime became a KG. More on that later.
Robb jumped over Sansa to consider naming Jon his heir. We don't know the result.
There is some talk that Aerys disinherited Rhaegar/Aegon in favor of Viserys. The Targs most of all have a history of complicated inheritances to fill the seat on the Iron Throne.
In other words it's pretty damned rare to disinherit a legal heir.
Then we have Samwell. In the novels, even the most ineffective legal heirs in noble families inherit their due, and even psychotic bastards can be upjumped to protect the family line.
But Samwell, by all accounts bright and intelligent, is publicly shamed and kicked to the icy curb. He's not a criminal. He's not a sadistic psycho. He's whole of limb, no sign of mental shortcomings or slowness. He's devoted to his family and mother. So, what's Randyll's problem?
The problem is that Samwell is not his son. He's bookish, loves music, and is not interested in learning the ways of the warrior. Sounds pretty familiar to me. And he loves kittens just like his dead Princess sister. (had to throw that one in, because kittens).
In particular, Randyll is adamant that Samwell doesn't inherit Heartsbane.
Text evidence (in progress):
"I will have no more of that," Lord Randyll told his wife harshly. "You ruined one boy with those soft septon's songs, do you mean to do the same to this babe?" Then he looked at Sam and said, "Go sing to your sisters, if you must sing. I don't want you near my son."
How it may have happened:
Not to get too much into this, but I'm on board with the notion that either Rhaeger or Elia or the two together conspired to send baby Aegon south to protect him. Nothing explains the presence of the KG better than baby Aegon. IMO. Regardless, GRRM has left baby Aegon's fate wide open. Switched in the crib, sent off to be raised as a proper hidden King, and re-emerging as a suspicious character named Young Grigg. GRRM always intended for Aegon to live.
But Young Griff is not Aegon, Samwell Tarly is.
Placing baby Aegon in Dorne isn't far-fetched. We also have a reference between Samwell Tarley and Samwell Dayne - a King of House Dayne who once sacked and burned Oldtown.
So let's look at Dorne.
Dorne:
Look at a map of western Dorne. We've got Starfall, High Hermitage and Blackmont. Nightsong, Vulture's Roost and the tower of joy (heh).
Horn Hill, seat of House Tarly, is not far. It's also between Highgarden and Oldtown. In other words, it's geographically right in the mix of things.
Starfall – infamous location of a “stillborn baby girl” and Ashara's suicide. House Dayne. Wylla, Edric Dayne's wetnurse, is also implicated in baby mysteries.
High Hermitage – cadet branch of house Dayne. Gerold Dayne tries to incite war with the throne by killing Myrcella. Loose cannons.
Blackmont – sigil: A black vulture with a pink infant in its claws, on yellow. Historically enemies of the marcher lords. (including the Tarlys). The first Vulture King is said to be a Blackmont.
Famous member Benedict Blackmont was rumored to worship a dark god, and be able to transform himself into a vulture. Nymeria sent him to the Wall.
The Vulture Kings – Dornish outlaws against the Iron Throne.
Marcher Lords – Caron, Dondarrion, Selmy, Swann. Tarly, Peake. Lords of the Reach and the Stormlands who defend against Dorne.
The Vulture Hunt – When the first Vulture King conspired against Aeyns 1 Targaryen, the marcher lords banded together with Orys Baratheon to hunt him out. Savage Sam Tarly used Heartsbane in the battles. Wyl of Wyl is an infamous enemny of Orys Baratheon
Second Vulture King – burned out of the Dornish Mountains by Dondarrion/Caron for conspiring against Daeron II Targaryen
Vulture's Roost – a ruined castle in the Dornish Mountains near the source of the Wyl River. It is like totally obvious this is where the Vulture Kings hid out. Add in the Vulture sigil. Add in the proximity to the tower of joy and Summerhall and Starfall. And Horn Hill.
More soon, specifically the significance of Brienne's Chapter that's obsessed with the Tarlys and a delivery of eggs (Aegs, people!)
