General chat thread for discussing movies and films. In the theater, at home, wherever. New movies, old movies. One movie, two movies, red movies, blue movies... you get the idea.
Please use spoiler tags, as needed. Otherwise... this thread is mainly for initial impressions, recommendations, etc.

And to kick this off... I took three 11 yr olds to see Captain America: Civil War last night, in the theater. Which, in my opinion, was borderline too mature for them - but I'm sure that, of the three kids, my son was the least de-sensitized to violence. (In other words... most 11 year olds wouldn't bat an eye.) Anyway. Not a whole lot of plot in the movie - which is impressive, considering it was 2.5 hours long. And more impressive, because it was really pretty good in spite of lacking plot. It was sorta like... just... two hours of impressive fight scenes and special effects, interspersed with occasional exposition. Fun for Marvel fans especially, though. Leaving plot out of a film works better when the characters and backstories have already been developed elsewhere.

Good idea snowfyre ! The last film I watched was A Walk in the Woods, based on the Bill Bryson book of walking the Appalachion trail with his childhood friend. While I enjoyed both Robert Redford and Nick Nolte's performances, I didn't like the film much. I really should know better because there are few films, based on books that I've read and liked, that I actually end up liking. I don't know why it is, but if I've got the mental canon in my head about a book, the films almost always fall short. I've noticed, however, if I see the film first, then read the book or short story it's based on, I tend to like the films, perhaps not better, but I like them for the type of media they are.

there are few films, based on books that I've read and liked, that I actually end up liking. This is a fundamental truth, put into words for me by my fifth grade teacher: "Rarely - maybe once in a blue moon - is a movie better than the original book." One of those things I internalized, as a kid - and confirmed through my own experience. Probably the underlying bias behind my refusal to watch Game of Thrones. Lol. (Also, it was the first time I encountered that phrase: "once in a blue moon.")

Has anyone seen the new x-men yet? I haven't, but would be interested to hear what folks think. I don't get out to the theaters much, and I think I'm a few movies behind on the X-men at this point.

Watched Deadpool the other night. I gotta say.....It rocked. NOT a kids superhero movie by ANY stretch, so be warned there. Oh, but many many audible laughter moments, and a great Stan Lee appearance. Tonight? "Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies".

I just saw Hacksaw Ridge which was released in Nov 2016, but it wasn't on my radar at that time. It was at our local "cheap" theatre, the beautifully restored State Theatre in Hutchinson. Wow. What a great movie and it's a true story to boot! The biographical movie is about Army Medic Desmond Doss who was listed as a conscientious objector, but he called himself a conscientious cooperator because he thought WWII was just, but his religious beliefs would not allow him to touch a weapon. He suffered persecution and punishment in basic training for his beliefs, but many of his fellow unit members visibly weeped remembering how they treated him when they owed their lives to him. He was the first conscientious objector to win the Medal of Honor for saving 75 men after the battle of Okinawa, bringing the injured to safety and lowering them down the sheer cliff of what was nicknamed Hacksaw Ridge. The best part is to watch actual film documentary footage of the real Desmond in 2003 recalling how he prayed to god to save "just one more". I thought the film was actually a war protest movie. Surprisingly, at least to me, it was directed by Mel Gibson...his first film after a roughly ten year absence from directing. Warning: its' a tear jerker.

Took the kids to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them. Prequel of course to the Harry Potter series. It had a few call outs to characters that would ultimately show up in the Potters series (Dumbledore, LeStrange, etc.). Even had a few cool guest appearance that surprised all of us; so much so that I will not even attempt to put a Spoiler around it in case you watch it. Eddie Redmayne was by far the shining star in this movie.
Overall I gave it a C+.

We rented The Magnificent Seven (remake) with Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt. Save your money. It was horrible. Rating D+.
It used one of often used techniques in old Western's to bring out the Gatling Gun. Why is it when they write a movie with the big shootout at the end employing the use of the Gatling gun that they save it towards the very end of fight. They send in 200 soldiers to get slaughtered and then the boss man says....bring out the Big Papi or something to that effect, then they shoot the town to shreds. As Sargent Rhodes said in Iron Man 2...you should lead with that next time.
Anyway...hopefully I've spared all of your some grief.

Slightly different subject. The Netflix series....OA.
NOTE: I can't tell you what OA means as it would spoil everything.
Curious if anyone has seen and is interested in discussing. I don't think this one requires a separate thread, but could rather be discussed in a few posts.

Two reviews:
Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Not as good as the first one, but plenty of action and comedy. Drax and baby Groot sort of steal the show in my estimates, but I shan't go any further so as to avoid any spoilers. If you do go, make note that there are (5) post trailers. So sit tight.
Alien/Covenant. Sequel to Prometheus and in my opinion not as good. I really enjoyed Prometheus a lot so the bar was set pretty high in my standards. They do set the stage for a follow up movie, but if you are looking on line at any of the other reviews this was already public knowledge. As you might guess, the synthetic David (Michael Fassbender) steals the show.
Until Wonder Woman....
