I am still wondering about Ned's recollection that when they found him; he was holding Lyanna's hand on her death bed. The question of course; where did Ned find her and what does it mean that some party or other found him with her. This kind of implies that he took off on his own and that Howland gathered a party to search for him.
If we assume for the moment that Lyanna wasn't at the ToJ; else there would be no need to look for him; then it would seem that his next destination was Starfall to return Arthur's sword. After that we lose track of him until White Harbor and he is already traveling with a mysterious woman whom it's supposed is some common woman, pregnant with his child, sent overseas, with a bag of silver.
Later we get a story from Edric Dayne that he and Jon were milk brothers both nursed by the same woman, Wylla. This would seem to place Jon at Starfall. Again if Lyanna was there; why would anyone have to go looking for Ned?
Looking around the map of Dorne shows a port location called Wyl in close approximation to the ToJ with an interesting association to a warrior maiden called Wylla of Wyl. The story about Aemon Targaryen and the pit vipers is also interesting given Ned's comment to Robert that he would rather entrust a child to a pit viper than Tywin Lannister; which probably isn't saying much given the story about Aemon.
Westeros Wiki:
During the final stage of the Conquest of Dorne, when Daeron I Targaryen was attacked and killed under the pretext of a peace banner and Prince Aemon Targaryen was imprisoned by the Wyls.[7] Lord Wyl refused to free Aemon, when Baelor came to Dorne seeking peace. Baelor returned with the Prince of Dorne's acceptance for Aemon's release and Lord Wyl relented. However, instead of freeing Aemon himself, he gave Baelor the key to Aemon's cage and an invitation to use it. However, Aemon was now trapped inside a cage, naked and exposed to the elements. Below the cage, a pit had been dug and filled with many vipers. Baelor entered the pit and opened the cage, getting bitten by the vipers in the process. The Dragonknight was able thrust the door and and pull his cousin from the pit. The Wyls are said to have laid wagers as Prince Aemon struggled to climb out of the pit with his cousin flung across his back.[8]
Wylla of Wyl was a warrior-maid of House Wyl who fought besides Yoren Yronwood against King Durran the Young at the Battle by the Bloody Pool and turned back.[1]
I imagine that it's not an uncommon thing for serving men and women to name their children after lords and ladies of the houses they serve. Or for servants to move between houses and serve the Wyls or the Daynes. So it seems possible to me that Ned either went searching on his own and found Lyanna at Wyl or was told where to find her. Jon may well have been with her and nursed by Wylla at castle Wyl.
Next we hear of Ned he is in the vicinity of White Harbor; location of the original Wolf's Den, now a prison with it's historical association with Jon Stark. And another association with Wylla of House Manderley, another fierce woman:

I know about the promise … Maester Theomore, tell them! A thousand years before the Conquest, a promise was made, and oaths were sworn in the Wolf's Den before the old gods and the new. When we were sore beset and friendless, hounded from our homes and in peril of our lives, the wolves took us in and nourished us and protected us against our enemies. The city is built upon the land they gave us. In return we swore that we should always be their men. Stark men![4]
These outbursts are all in the context of Lord Manderly under duress by Tywin Lannister who holds his son hostage in exchange for an alliance with the Freys and the Boltons. He publicly denies aid to Davos; puts him in a comfortable cell in the Wolf's Den and stages his death. Then sends him on a secret mission to find Rickon.
And last there is Jaime's strange taunt to Catelyn about Ned's bastard named Snow... "such a white name" and the comment that he was loved by one Stark for a kindness he didn't do. All the descriptions of white harbor are white stone, white buildings, white cliffs. Jon Stark, Wolf's Den, Karstarks and their sigil - the winter sun (son) white sun on a black field. Such a strange coincidence that, if you think that Jon is also a son (sun) of Dorne.
Can we place Lyanna anywhere after the Tourney at Harrenhall without invoking RLJ. Does it seem likely that she was travelling with her father's party on their way to Brandon's wedding? Is it likely that she also went to KL with her father and taken prisoner there. Was she later smuggled out and hidden at the Wolf's Den or Castle Wyl. Is this the kindness that Jamie never did.
