Two seasons from director Jane Campion, who we know from The Piano to be a quirky Australian determined to find beauty in the unbeautiful and grace from tragedy, although ugliness and disgrace are often the punchline anyway.
The main protagonist is a detective played by Elisabeth Moss who, in Season One, investigates a murder in New Zealand. Really awesome group of actors including Holly Hunter and David Wenham (Faramir). I had no expectations of the series since I just stumbled across it. Crazy and unpredictable and heart-breaking.
The second season is airing right now on Sundance as a special 3 night miniseries - 2 1/2 hours per night - but it's available on demand!
Season Two adds Gwendolyn Christie and Nicole Kidman to the cast, moves to Australia and features another murder investigation.
The subject matter in both seasons can be pretty grim, it's all very "dark underbelly" populated with very damaged characters - and in some cases we see what damages them firsthand, it can be pretty tough to watch.
Waiting to watch the Part 3 finale tonight, and don't want to give too much away until whoever wants to see it does so. But it's very different sort of TV experience, very immersive and often painful - just the sort of thing I think GoT fans might appreciate except this is, unfortunately, not a fantasy series. The issues Jane Campion probes and pokes are all too real, and features some decidedly feminist themes.
As an aside, meeting each of these characters is like a punch in the face. You can tell immediately who they are, it's all so raw and to-the-bone. It made me realize what the GoT writers have lost along the way, especially since they had to find their own path after Old Turtle abandoned them.
Melifeather - tagging you because I know you're always looking for a new show or two
