Westworld S03-E07 Passed Pawn
You’re back! Let's jump right in, shall we?
A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
So passed pawn, eh? I have only dabbled in chess when I was a kid, so we’re venturing into another unknown area like last week’s quantum physics reference. The following is my abridged version drawn from the wiki:
In chess, a passed pawn is one with no opposing pawns in any adjacent files to prevent it from advancing to the eighth rank. Once a pawn reaches the eighth rank it is promoted according to the player’s choice to either bishop, knight, rook, or queen. A passed pawn protected by its own pawns is called a protected passed pawn. Two or more passed pawns on adjacent files are called connected passed pawns, and they are very strong. A pair of connected passed pawns is sometimes called a steamroller. It is often strategically advantageous to advance a pair of connected passed pawns (the steamroller) in tandem, because this makes them more difficult to blockade.
Dolores and Caleb were definitely a connected passed pawn steamroller if we consider reaching Solomon as reaching the eighth rank, sacrificing the passed pawns of Dolores’ clones along the way. The conversation they had overlooking Sonora was very similar to the talk Dolores had with Teddy - I’m assuming while she considered using him - moving him - as a pawn.
If we’re going to continue the chess analogy, then Maeve is definitely a queen while Hector may have been her king, although its more likely that we should give the king designation to Serac. If Serac is one king, who is the opponent king? I'm assuming if Dolores and Caleb are passed pawns there must be another as yet unrevealed player.
An episode recap written by Insider noted that the opening scene included a piano piece called Orfeo ed Euridice: Dance of the Blessed Spirits. The myth of Orfeo (Orpheus) and Eurydice is one of tragic love. They were married, but Eurydice died shortly after. Heartbroken, Orpheus descended into the afterworld to see her. Hades told Orpheus he could bring her back to the mortal realm, but only if he managed to not look back at her while they ascended. Orpheus failed, and Eurydice was lost forever.
The song and myth does seem to fit Maeve and Hector - in reverse of course. Maeve brought Hector back only to see someone crush his “data orb”, effectively destroying him forever. I don’t recall if we saw exactly who did the killing, but it only makes sense that Serac was behind it and framed Dolores so that Maeve would be motivated to go after her.
So, super cool computerized weapons in the future, eh? With all of the technology at her disposal, Maeve still favors her samurai sword - its personal.
Clementine finally made a return. I was expecting her, but not on Maeve’s side.
A couple details learned last night: 1) The Inner Journeys facility is near San Francisco. 2) The synthetic marker Chalores injected into William’s blood made it possible for her to infiltrate Serac’s system to find the location of Solomon. Oh yeah, there’s a third confirmation - at least I think so. 3) William is not a host. He is human, but he’s a human that Serac tried to reeducate.
There’s a very cool timeline that the Insider compiled here: www.insider.com/westworld-timeline-spoilers-2018-4
Biggest surprise of the evening that I should have seen coming - Caleb’s RICO app was given to him by Serac, and the missions he selects are to round up insurgents which are called “outliers”. Targets are often killed, but some are brought to the reeducation centers for reconditioning. They were drugged and interrogated until they recalled major events differently, in other words they are brain-washed. Caleb was brain-washed, as was his friend Francis, and it's quite possible that neither of them were ever in Russia fighting, but were killing US civilians or other military operatives the whole time. The RICO log showed that Caleb and Francis carried out kidnappings, assassinations, arson, enhanced interrogation, double homicide, murder, intimidation, and most enlightening, domestic terrorism. In case you didn’t catch it the first time go back and compare Caleb’s “Russian” memory. The building has graffiti written in Russian and there’s a parked armored truck. The true memory changed the graffiti to English and the armored truck became a Land Rover type utility vehicle.
Only one out of every nine outliers are successfully “reeducated”. The rest are either killed or put into one of those coffin looking pods and frozen, and apparently connected to Solomon - for what purpose remains unclear. Usually in sci-fi stories, humans preserved in pods are being consumed. Are these humans providing an energy resource for Solomon?
Dolores noted that the EMP - electromagnetic pulse - device was intended to confine Solomon from ever leaving. In other words, it was set to deactivate any robotic machine in the area, and perhaps even blow up the entire Solomon system should it be breached. Dolores rubbed the back of her neck - a reminder of the explosive device planted in every host in case they escaped Westworld, or any of the other worlds on Delos island.
The most confusing detail was that William and Caleb share a patient number: U M27021001912B. The letter “U” is a classification, but the rest…how can they be the same? At the top of Caleb’s profile there’s a second registration number that adds a “47” to the sequence. Does that make Caleb a 47th version of William?
Bernarnold tells Stubbs that Dolores “was built with a poetic sense of irony in mind” — and that drive is why she recruited Caleb, the man predestined by Solomon to directly destroy mankind. Dolores may have lost an arm, but I don’t think we’ve seen the end of her. Somehow she triggered a device that brought her and Maeve “offline”. Will Caleb or anyone else be able to bring Dolores back online while leaving Maeve off?
I'm sad to say, but I believe next week is the season finale. Are we only to receive eight episodes this season rather than ten? Next week's episode is titled Crisis Theory.
