A bit of helpful info for newcomers:
What the heck is this forum about?
In a nutshell, it's a forum dedicated to ferretting out the similarities in arcs of ASOIAF and early Marvel comics. For a more detailed explanation, dive into the Welcome thread!
Can I talk about the books/show here?
If the topic relates to a comic character or plot arc, absolutely. For specific book/show talk, there’s a forum for that.
Can I discuss other comic series/characters besides those mentioned here in the essays?
YES! I am obviously Marvel-centric and focus mainly on the Avengers, but if you find something awesome in ASOIAF that correlates to DC / X-Men / etc, go for it! GRRM covered a lot of comic territory in his day; I’m sure I’m overlooking a lot.
Can I talk about the Modern-age comics, since many of the characters discussed here are still around today?
The intent of the forum is to focus on the era during which GRRM was actively reading – unfortunately since GRRM was actively reading a long time ago, this means we look only at the stuff that came out a long time ago. The Man Himself has noted in several interviews that he no longer follows the current issues, so those haven't been brought into the mix.
That being said, it is known that The Man Himself also still talks/collaborates with many of the old-school comic guys (example: Chris Claremont of X-Men fame) who currently write for Marvel, and no doubt there’s “idea sharing” going on. It’s entirely possible that GRRM has gotten/will get inspiration from the newer arcs to use for future plot or character development, so there may be some opportunity to step into the 21st century at a later point.
Can I just talk about the comics/graphic novels?
Discussion needs to remain pertinent to the ASOIAF series and content. Thor v. Hulk from 1972 in juxtaposition to Rhaegar/Robert fighting at the Trident = OK; a hypothetical deathmatch between Hulk and The Mountain, not so much.
Can I talk about the Marvel or DC movies?
Again, if the movie plot is relevant to the book stuff. Dr. Strange will be hitting theaters this year, and there’s a really good chance that the origin story and main characters will be totally relevant to the discussion here. Deadpool, the upcoming Batman v. Superman, more doubtful. Avengers, X-Men, and all the individual character spinoffs, maybe, if some of the older/origin arcs surface in the current films. (If any of the future Avengers/Thor movies cover Ragnarok, it’s on like Donkey Kong.)
Can I talk about other popular Sci-Fi/Fantasy series, like Dune or Doctor Who?
Absolutely - we have a separate Entertainment forum where fans of both will be happy to engage.
Can I post character images/archived pages of the comics?
Yep! Pictures are awesome; adds life to the written content. We're talking comic books, after all! Please though...keep pictures clean and PG-13. Linking to online images is fine, but if you aren't familiar with how to adjust the size of the photo in your post, let me know and I'll provide a tutorial. If a hotlinked pic is eye-bendingly and annoyingly huge, I may preemptively pop in to resize on your behalf.
Also, my personal preference is to post 'official' images of the characters drawn by the Marvel illustrators. There's some great fan art out there for sure, but let's use the real deals.
Where are you finding all of this Marvel information?
I source bios and issue-specific content from Wikipedia, the Marvel Database Wikia, Marvel Universe Wiki, Marvel Directory, Comic Vine Wiki, Marvel App, Comic Book Database, and Big Comic Book Database. Occasionally I find some tiny nugget or esoteric factoid cataloged at a more obscure site, but 98% of my reference material comes from the above. My M.O. is to gather info from all the major databases, condense it into a TL;DR synopsis (if you can believe that), and paraphrase into something non-enthusiasts can follow. Images are courtesy of Google Search and come from all over.
Why are you even talking about this? It's not like a connection will ever be proven or anything.
True. But, a man needs a hobby. Besides, we have some time to kill between books, so why not? I've had a great time diving into it; maybe you will too!
Be excellent to each other, enjoy and have fun!
Your Marvel-ous Mod,
Some Pig
