It was a mention of the former castle of House Manderly, Dunstonbury, in TWOIAF (one of GRRM's contributions) that helped lead me to Dunstanburgh and then to the folklore in question. I didn't come across the reference to Craster, but this just kind of reinforces that GRRM is very much aware of this legend of Dunstanburgh Castle.
ETA: one of the funniest/most brilliant posts I ever read on the Heresy thread was Snowfyre's post about Craster's Kippers, which, at least in my mind, sealed the deal that the White Walkers are Martin's "red herrings".

I wouldn't mind a review of Craster's kippers! Heresy has circled back around to discussing the white walkers again. I'm getting fatigued going over the same stuff all the time over there, but he does draw a few new people now and then.

Has anyone else thought that the Horn of Winter could have been named so because the Horn originally belonged to the Kings of Winter? It was then named Horn of Joramun because Joramun took it? The horn that calls the giant direwolves and all that. The once kings of Winter become kings of the North afterward.

I was thinking that Joramun was the one that howled and his brother, the Lord of Winterfell heard him.

Is it possible that the horn does several things: waking giants in the earth and calling the direwolves? Considering how GRRM likes to layer things on top of each other.
added: Consider that the horn has already been winded once during the time of Joramun to wake the giants and that Jon muses winding it again will put them back to sleep.

Thought I found something to add, but slowfyre has it covered on the first page.

I stole a screenshot from the most recent Season 2 trailer. It was hard to notice this at first glance but... on the show, the current "Night's King" has the horn

Crackpot time. It also binds dragons to the owner of the horn!

But yes, it's a horn for sure IMO.

Yeah that's the bit I was referring to. It looks kinda sharp, that flaring out. And like I said there's bindings right above it. As if a blade was being held in place. Right colour for a ShowSword too. The whole thing is weird. It could be a sword like weopn and held on the back like you would a scabbarded sword, like Jon uses with Longclaw. But it also has that strange halbert shape at the end, which would be held up right, if it was a halbert. Meh, I'll go with your theory that it's a horn

Could Tormund Giantsbane, Horn-blower and Breaker of Ice, Speaker to Gods be a descendant of Joramun, through bloodline or practices? Heck, even their names are similar. Joramun seems to have been on the wrong side of the law/Wall when it came to the Starks of old, and Tormund has this to say about Starks, "Well met, Jon Snow. I am fond o’ wargs, as it happens, though not o’ Starks." Hmmm.
