I've recently been researching Pre-Historical events that shaped the world we live in and, I discovered some events that parallel those in ASOIAF. They may even be the inspiration for the events in ASOIAF.
The Storegga Slide:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storegga_Slide
I haven't seen anyone bring this one up before anywhere (but if have please let me know) but ~8000 years ago a Tsunami crashed upon the landbridge between Great Britain and mainland Europe. It is the greatest natural disaster to ever befall the British Isles. It is said that the tsunami was so powerful that if you were within sight of the coast, you would have been completely dismembered (and killed). The Tsunami went pretty far inland and left its mark in the sediment layer.
There are a couple theories as to what triggered the Tsunami. It could have been an earthquake triggered by expanding methane gas or a gigantic underwater landslide.
Relevance to the Story/ASOIAF
Our author GRRM loves keeping his story close to scientific accuracy as possible (see: he gave the dragons 2 legs and wings because there is nothing in the Animal Kingdom with 4 legs AND wings). He seems interested in Pre-History, as his story includes direwolves/mammoths/etc. and other prehistorical animals. He also loves playing with our expectations.
That being said, I believe it is possible that there was a Storegga Slide like event several thousand years ago, in later years it was called "the Hammer of the Waters" or "the Shattering of the Arm of Dorne", etc.
What I propose is that this event was a natural one and, not a magical phenomenon. I think it was the result of large underwater landslide (or perhaps earthquake). Like in the history of our Earth, this would have happened as the last major "Ice Age" was ending (Doggerland was slowly disappearing as the ocean levels increased).
If someone lived through this event and witnessed it, it would have seemed magical without our scientific understanding roughly 8 thousand years later.
I know this is pretty rough. Just wanted to share. Thoughts?
