Interesting... *vainly fumbling for any recollection of English history* This part is very interesting: Cromwell was an intelligent man who read well. He had not only experienced life abroad as a younger man I wonder if Lord Littlefinger went to Essos for a while following his exile from Riverrun?

I wonder if Lord Littlefinger went to Essos for a while following his exile from Riverrun? Heh, that is exactly what I was thinking. You're picking up what I'm putting down! Petyr had to become familiar with manipulation somewhere. We have the first piece in this thread, he learned first hand from Hoster how to tie things together through marriage alliances. But that's not enough, I don't think, to account for how skilled Littlefinger is. Plus he already has the connection to Braavos. And as we see throughout the books, Petyr travels a lot. He's 'sent' hither and thither to do the quiet work for the 'crown'. It's also Petyr who knows about the Faceless Men and what kind of payment they would demand to kill Dany. So where did all this knowledge come from? Where and when did make all these little connections with folk that facilitate his network? A little spit of land with sheep dropping? Right.

Something you guys said upthread about the Baelish name triggered the memory of a post Urrax made on Sable Hall. Petyr Baelish is the real world equivalent of Thomas Cromwell. This sounds quite Petyr like -- I like it. Hillary Mantel's books are fantastic. Lysa claims that she talked Jon Arryn into giving Petyr a chance to prove himself. Petyr tripled the investment made. Something that would appeal to Tywin Lannister.

There is a similar gap in Cromwell's history. You get some of that in Mantel's book Wolf Hall but he keeps that part of his history under wraps from just about everybody.

If we kinda of compare the two then I wonder if Petyr might not come to a similar end? We all know that Martin takes bits and pieces from here and there, with no real life follow through of who that character is reflecting in history. However, there is a nice symmetry to Cromwell and Wolsey. On a side note I found this on historical review of the BBC production of Wolf Hall. Does Petyr know about Ramsay? On the show we have this weak-arsed confession that he didn't know what Ramsay is like, but how is that even possible when Batfinger knows everything!?
